It is with heavy hearts, yet with profound gratitude for a life beautifully lived, that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Dolores Mae Mayher. Dolores passed peacefully on March 1, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by cherished memories and the love of her family. Born on July 19, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, she graced this world with her spirited presence for nearly 97 remarkable years. Dolores was the cherished daughter of Bernard and Mary Blake, whose love and guidance shaped her into the extraordinary woman she became. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, John J. Mayher, and her beloved son, Thomas J. Mayher. While their absence is deeply felt, we take comfort in imagining their joyful reunion in Heaven.
A devoted and proud mother, Dolores is survived by her children and their spouses: Joan (Mike Mankowski), Tim (Elena), Jack (Nancy), Jerry (Judy), and Dennis (Barbra). Her family was the greatest joy of her life. She delighted in watching her legacy grow through her fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward her wisdom, laughter, and boundless love. Dolores and John shared a remarkable life together, one rooted in enduring love, partnership, and adventure. Together they raised their six children in a home that was always welcoming, warm, and filled with humor. Their door—and their hearts—were always open to family and friends alike.
An avid traveler and enthusiastic golfer, Dolores embraced life with a sassy spirit, a generous heart, and an unmistakable zest for living. She was known for her quick wit, infectious laughter, and love of gathering with others—especially over lunch, a good cocktail, and plenty of conversation. If you had the pleasure of knowing Dolores, you loved her. A woman of deep compassion and intellect, Dolores valued education and held great respect for the medical field. She even worked as a medical coder for a time, combining her keen mind with her desire to help others. In keeping with her lifelong commitment to learning and service, she made the selfless decision to donate her body to science, continuing to give to the world even after her passing.
In accordance with her wishes, a memorial will be held to celebrate Dolores’s long and joyful life. She asked not for sorrow, but for a gathering filled with love, laughter, and the sharing of treasured memories among those she held dear.
Family and Friends will gather for a Memorial Mass on Friday, March 27, 2026, 11:00 am at St. Linus Church 10300 Lawler Ave, Oak Lawn, IL. A Memorial Luncheon will be held immediately after at Palermo's Restaurant 4849 W. 95th St. Oak Lawn, IL.
