John was inducted into the Army in Sep 1960 and served as an MP in Germany until Aug 1962. Upon his return to Illinois, he was hired by the Santa Fe Railroad, later becoming the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, where he worked for over 50 years as a Switchman, Yardman, and Conductor.
John was an active member of the United Transportation Union also for over 50 years. For a season, John was the Chairman of Local 1494. His personal records show he was instrumental in arguing numerous cases for fellow Union members.
His personal hobbies included making fly fishing hooks and sewing. Although never married, John leaves behind several friends and relatives attesting to his generosity.
