Obituary

ROBERT E. BOGUS, 68, died on September 19, 2018, from complications of multiple sclerosis.  He is survived by his beloved son, Randy; dear former wife, Gail Oppenheim; goddaughter Megan Sanchez and her daughter Natalia; his stepmother and aunt, Florence Yager, and by his stepsister Carol Sikora Mayer  and her family, Edward F. Mayer and Michael P. Mayer.  He is also survived by an aunt, Florence Bielawski, as well a large family of cousins in the Chicago area and many loyal, caring friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Angeline Jasinski Boguslawski; his father, Edward Boguslawski; his stepfather, Albin Sikora; his stepbrother Thomas E. Sikora; his maternal grandparents, John and Mary Jasinski; and his paternal grandparents, John and Mary Boguslawski.

Bob was a graduate of St. Joseph & St. Anne School and St. Ignatius College Prep. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama and an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University.

His professional career began as a school counselor in the Chicago Public Schools where he worked with children of poverty living in housing projects.  This experience deepened his understanding of poverty and racism, especially gang development and drug addiction, and led to his becoming an addictions rehabilitation counselor.  After several years of agency counseling, Bob assisted in developing graduate certificate programs at two institutions.  He also taught at Wright College and at The University of Chicago.

Bob was a descendant of two prominent Polish-American families.  His maternal grandfather was a civic leader in Bridgeport and member of the Board of Directors of Pulaski Savings & Loan.  His paternal grandfather was a member of a large South Chicago family and a descendant of Wojciech Boguslawski, a famous 19th c. actor, playwright, and director who founded the National Theatre and School of Drama in Warsaw.

Special thanks to the staff of Rush Medical Center for their dedicated care of Bob over the years and to Jason Preucel and William McGee for their exceptional support of Bob's daily health needs.

A celebration of Bob's life will take place from 11:00am to 12:45pm on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Wolniak Funeral Home, 5700 So. Pulaski, Chicago, followed by a luncheon at the European Chalet at Archer and Harlem.  All family and friends are welcome to attend.
